Mary Mobley – Ceramic Potter
Mary Mobley found the art medium of clay in 1992....or rather it found her. She began experimenting by taking ceramic classes and joining The Creative Play Studio in Alexandria Virginia. Her works have been seen in many art shows around the country. As a mostly self-taught clay builder and potter she has learned that, “The piece of clay will tell you what it wants.” She might start out with a bowl in mind and it will end up being a plate. This kind of synergism is very much reflected in her free form works and hand built fish of which much detail is apparent. Her clay ideas are pressed, pulled, scored, rolled, dug out and attached with attention to the forms of nature as her inspiration. “Pottery has been around since time began, and I hope my pieces will be appreciated long after I am gone.”

Pai-Pai Potters - Daria Mariscal
The Indigenous peoples of California have been pit firing clay pottery ollas in the Southern California and northern Mexico area for THOUSANDS of years using the pit-fire method. Daria Mariscal, makes traditional pit fired pottery. She quarries her own clay. Darria also weaves baskets with juncus, palm and pinon pine needles, and teaches pottery making classes. She has taught on the Viejas Indian Reservation and Barona Indian Reservation in San Diego County. Daria lives in the PaiPai community of Santa Catarina, Baja California, Mexico.

Digital Designs by Robin
Robin Waters has always had a passion for art, and when she found a media that could transcend traditional painting, she became a digital artist. As a little girl a new box of crayons was always her favorite gift. She continued her education, studying oil, water color, acrylics and various mediums at the Oregon School of Arts, specializing in fiber/fabric and designing hand painted wearable art. Now making her home in Baja, she has turned to another technique, that of photography and digital painting. Portraits are her favorites, creating timeless heirloom art from your photograph.

She was studied at the Chelyabinsk Art College (1975-1978) and at the Art-Graphic faculty of the Nizhniy Tagil Pedagogical University (1978-1983). As an artist she works in different creative and production groups. She has produced work ranging from paintings to interior design. Her preference is oil and pastel. Blues and Arts Fiesta Raises over $65,000

Blues and Arts Fiesta Raises over $65,000
The community of San Felipe and Sonshine Hacienda Children’s Home Benifit
by Robin Waters

On a sun-washed day, the last Saturday in March, on the shores of the Sea of Cortez, lay a small Mexican fishing village, San Felipe, Baja, Mexico. But that day was extraordinary; because the Lions Club of San Felipe and Mexico Living put on the largest event the community had ever seen, the 3rd Annual Blues and Arts Fiesta.

The stage was a behemoth of technology, soaring into the azure skies with a breathtaking mountain backdrop that looks like a picture postcard. About 2,000 people came from all over Mexico and the U.S. to hear great bands and cool music. As you entered San Felipe’s Baseball Field, a wonderful aroma from food vendors was wafting around the incoming crowd of spectators. Tortillas, enchiladas, empanadas, hamburgers, pizza, Bar-B-Que, fish tacos and fresh shrimp made your mouth water. Artisan booths went on and on around the perimeter with a dazzling array of paintings, sculpture, pottery, metal crafts and jewelry, including handcrafts from the indigenous Pai-Pai and Huichol Indians of Mexico.

The bands were introduced by MC Denny “Moondog” Flannigan and Co-Promoter John Pack. The bands included many award-winning groups starting with Chet and the Committee, San Diego Music Awards Best Blues Band nominee, 2007 and 2008. Second in line was Vatos Locos, 2008 Mexico Living Readers Poll winner for San Felipe Best Entertainment. Mofo Party Band kept the party going with Chicago Blues and West Coast Jump. Then the Backwater Blues Band came on strong and never stopped.

Next was Lisa Cee—and what a performance! Then as the sun was fading, Agave Blues took stage and performed one of their best ever—incredible! Shelle entertained the audience with her upbeat and sultry rhythm and blues sounds, and the audience ate it up! Back for the third year, Michele Lundeen & Blue Streak, once again, “laid it down” with their hot rockin’ roadhouse blues, classic R&B and funky soul. As the show was winding down to a close, Johnny Mastro & Mama’s Boys sent the die-hards home with their raw soul and groove that doesn’t quit.

The Grand Marshal for this year was none other than Sal Fish, CEO of SCORE International. For over 40 years the Score Baja 1000, 500 and 250 off-road races have attracted professional racers, movie stars and celebrities that are legendary in the Baja, and Sal Fish is the legend maker. It was a natural fit of sand, sea, music, food, arts and a caring community.

The reason for all this community effort is to help fund the health and medical projects of the San Felipe B.C. Lions Club, which includes a special Lions project, Sonshine Hacienda, a home for abused or abandoned children. Currently children, whose parents are in crisis, are bussed 125 miles away to Mexicali, where there is little room for them, and a frightening experience to be so far from their homes. The new two-story facility will house 50 children and will hopefully be completed by year end.

None of it would have been possible without the 150 volunteers from the Lions Club, Mexico Living and the San Felipe community.

If you missed it, don’t let it happen again!

Blues Fiesta Like Old Home Week in San Felipe

Blues Fiesta Like Old Home Week in San Felipe
By Carla White
STAFF WRITER for Baja Times
Article from Baja Times Volume XXXI, Number 103 April 16-30, 2009

The Third Annual San Felipe Blues & Arts Fiesta put on by the Mexico Living Guide and the San Felipe Lions Club took place on Saturday, March 28, at the San Felipe baseball stadium. Interestingly, in addition to people from the San Felipe area and those coming south from the United States just for this open air concert, the charity event proved to be a magnet for many from Rosarito and Ensenada. Given the quality of the festival, it seems a sure bet that even more West-coasters will be there in 2010.

According to John Pack, publisher and editor of Mexico Living, and erstwhile Master of Ceremonies for the event, “More than $66,000 was raised for the Lions Club, and the attendance was approximately 1750 for the day!”

His enthusiasm was echoed by Rosarito’s own Polo Valencia, Polo’s Gallery, whose extensive art exhibition was one of the highlights of the festival. “We love this event,” said Polo, adding, “It gets a positive crowd that is happy to be here and people who are happy to support the arts—music, painting, everything!”

The Ensenada contingent in attendance seemed to agree. “The weather was perfect, the line-up was great and the bands were excellent -- especially Lisa Cee. We’ll be back!” noted Richard George, a first-time San Felipe visitor. Other performers included Agave Blues, MoFo Party Band, Vatos Locos, Michele Lundeen and Blues Streak, Johnny Mastro and Mama’s Boys, The Backwater Blues Band, Shelle Blue and Chet and The Committee.

Event proceeds will benefit The Sonshine Hacienda and The Flying Samaritans Medical Clinics. Sonshine Hacienda`s goal is to aid the social services of San Felipe in being able to place abused and/or abandoned children in a safe place, while they and their family situation can be evaluated more in depth. Flying Samaritans is a volunteer organization that operates free medical clinics in Baja California. Doctors, dentists, nurses, translators, pilots and support personnel drive or fly to clinics in private aircraft. The Flying Samaritans has four basic missions: primary care, specialty care, education and emergency care.

According to Pack, Mexico Living is proud to work with Lions Club International, which has a stated goal of creating and fostering a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international particpation. There is no doubt that the San Felipe Blues & Arts Fiesta is achieving that. For more information about the event, visit http://www.bluesandarts.com/

Blues & Arts Fiesta Reviews

Hear and See what they are all saying...

Mexico Living: SUCCESS! SUCCESS! Lots of Pictures on the way!

Channel 11 KYMA-TV from Yuma was in San Felipe filming the Blues and Arts Fiesta and interviewing people.
Watch Blues & Art Fiesta

Blue Roadrunner: "The Lions Club and Mexico Living Guide, with financial help from a vast roster of sponsors, did a great job of organizing and promoting the event, which drew seven Blues groups from the San Diego area as well as our own Agave Blues and Vatos Locos bands. The music was superb and the groups who are habitual émigrés to the festival keep improving their sound. Shelle Blue and Michele Lundeen were particularly galvanizing and inspired repeated ovations from the crowd...."

Kat's Korner:
The 3rd Annual Blues and Arts Fiesta was a great success and I personally had a blast. I had to leave for an hour to change my clothes and feed my dogs, but other than that, I stayed until it was over with. A big "thank you" to the Lions Club and the Packs of Mexico Living, Denny and Sandi Flannigan and everyone else involved (and there were many volunteers who ran their butts off). Possibly next year, we need a two day festival!

Casey Hamlin:
A great time for everyone and a super turnout if you missed this one we will have a bigger event next year please come an support us the San Felipe Lions Club, and have fun at the same time...

Seaside town in Mexico hosts popular fiesta

BY DARIN FENGER, SUN STAFF WRITER
March 8, 2009 - 5:58PM

Yuma Sun - Yumans are invited to head south of the border later this month for a day of music and art in San Felipe, Baja Calif.

The seaside town will host its third annual Blues and Arts Fiesta on March 28.

Eleven bands and 60 artists hailing from both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border will be showcased in the popular event.

San Felipe is located along the Sea of Cortez, 125 miles south of Mexicali, Baja Calif.

The Blues and Arts Fiesta is a major fundraiser for the San Felipe Lions Club. The nonprofit group uses proceeds from the event to support a home for abused and abandoned children in San Felipe, according to Kathy Preppernau, a spokeswoman for the club.

Preppernau said the event offers "amazing talent all encapsulated in cool sea breezes and majestic mountains."

The outdoor concert and art show will take place at the San Felipe Baseball Field. The fun will begin at 10 a.m. and the bands will play until 11 p.m.

Tickets are $20, but VIP packages are available, too. For tickets and information on border crossing and accommodations, go to BluesAndArts.com on the Web.

Many of the bands slated to perform have earned numerous honors in Mexico, and U.S. performer Gino Matteo, for example, was named Best Blues Guitarist at the Guitar Center Hollywood during the King of the Blues competition in 2006. Matteo has opened for B.B. King.

The band Vatos Locos was the 2008 winner of the Mexico Readers Poll, while Johnny Mastro & Mama’s Boys are past winners of LA Music Awards' Best Blues Band, and Michele Lundeen & Blues Streak has been nominated numerous times for San Diego Music Awards.

To see the full lineup of bands, go to the event's Web site.

Art forms on display - and available for sale - will include Mexico's famous string and wax paintings by the Huichol Indians and pottery made by the local Pai Pai Indians. There will also be numerous painters, joined by photographers and jewelry makers.

"This event provides a unique opportunity to help people and a community, while listening to amazing music and seeing spectacular art," Preppernau said. "We get a large influx of people from the U.S., especially those that live within driving distance, but many who fly to San Diego and drive from there."
